“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”
Sir Isaac Newton 1643-1727
Last month we talked about storytelling. and I left you with this quote: “Storytelling is our obligation to the next generation. Give something of meaning to your audience by inspiring, engaging and educating them with story.” Laura Holloway, Founder & Chief of “the Storytelling Agency
Here is a new story for today. I recently visited a men’s wear store looking for a pair of pants. Upon entering the store, I was immediately greeted by a salesperson with a big smile asking what he could do to help me. I told him what I needed, and he said, “Great! Right this way.” He proceeded to show me the store’s selection. I looked them over, asked a few questions and decided what I would purchase. (I am NOT a slow shopper). As we approached the cash register, the clerk asked me if I would be interested in a new belt to match those new pants. After a moment’s thought I realized that a new belt was just what I needed. On the way to the belt section of the store, the clerk pointed out some new flannel winter shirts. I looked them over, picked one I liked and added to the purchase. The clerk then asked if there was anything else I might be interested in. That made me chuckle, but I decided to pay for the pants, the belt and shirt and take my leave. I ended up spending significantly more money than I had intended. But will I be back? Yes! Why? Personal contact.
As I drove away, I began to ask myself: Wouldn’t the questions the clerk asked and his immediate follow-through help all leaders be more effective with their team, their clients/customers and with their family and friends? Throughout the past decade of this newsletter, I am sure you all know that I am a storyteller. I love telling stories and sharing opinions. YOUR stories also have a very important role in the success of your company. As Dale Carnegie reminds us, “An effective leader will ask questions instead of giving direct orders.” How well are you telling your story? How can you and your team do a better job telling your stories?
In telling our stories, like the clerk at the top if the page, we must also live them by our actions. When was the last time you asked your team, “How are you doing this morning? What can I do to help you better meet your challenges?” Also make sure that everyone knows about the “new flannel shirts.” When was the last time you returned to your staff several times to ask, “How are we doing? Do you need anything else?” By being more attentive and asking more and better questions like the clerk did, you can uncover truths and build relationships.
In September we discussed six important items to be sure are on our “buffet of leadership.” We talked about using storytelling to tell others about our company, products and services. Decide what your story is and put that story to work for yourself, the company and your teammates.
Here is a great quote telling us where we should be when the challenges are great:
“I've always believed that no officer's life, regardless of rank, is of such great value to his country that he should seek safety in the rear... Officers should be forward with their men at the point of impact.”

And HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO ALL!
PASS IT ON, YOU GIANTS!!
