Beyond Giants | The Leadership Weightroom

May 26, 2026

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

Sir Isaac Newton 1643-1727

For too long, leadership has been measured by how much weight a person can carry. The pressure. The decisions. The problems. The long hours. The responsibility of holding everything together.

But carrying everything is not always strength. Sometimes it is poor training.

A business becomes fragile when it depends too heavily on one person’s memory, energy, or ability to absorb chaos. Eventually, even the strongest leader becomes the bottleneck.

The next evolution of leadership is not about lifting more weight. It is about building the organization so the right weight is carried by the right people. That is the Leadership Weight Room.

In a real weight room, strength is not built by loading every plate onto one person’s back. Strength is built through form, repetition, discipline, recovery, and knowing which muscles are supposed to do the work. Business is no different.

When leaders try to unburden a company, they have to be careful not to create new weight in the wrong places. A decision made for efficiency can create friction for the customer. A system designed for control can slow down the people closest to the work. A process built by someone who understands technology may miss what actually happens in the field, on the sales floor, or in front of the consumer.

That is why the right people must be involved in the right decisions. Systems experts should help design better systems. Operators should help shape operational flow. Salespeople should help protect the customer experience. Leaders should understand where each team is strongest and make sure decisions are not being made in isolation from the people who will have to carry them.

The best leaders study what makes work heavier than it needs to be. They look for hidden friction: unclear communication, repeated problems, scattered information, delayed decisions, and preventable confusion.

They ask better questions. What are people chasing? What keeps slowing us down? Where are we relying on memory instead of process? Who understands this decision best? Who will feel the weight if we get this wrong?

This is not about doing less. It is about training the business to move better.

Technology can help, but only when leadership creates clarity first. Automation applied to confusion only creates faster confusion. AI layered onto poor systems only creates more noise.

The real work is human before it is technical. Define what matters. Simplify what repeats. Build systems that support people instead of exhausting them. Let people execute from their strengths, their experience, and their proximity to the work.

A person should not have to remember what a system can track. A team should not have to chase what a process can trigger. And a customer should not have to feel the burden of a decision made too far away from their experience.

The strongest companies of the future will not be built by leaders who carry the most weight. They will be built by leaders who know how to train the organization.

What weight should be removed? What weight should be redesigned? What weight belongs to the system? What weight belongs to the specialist? And what weight should never have been carried in the first place?

That is a different kind of strength. Not the strength to absorb endless pressure. The strength to build a business that can perform under pressure without breaking.

That is the Leadership Weight Room. And every great company eventually has to enter it.
